SEAMANSHIP Course SUMMARY

Any good public library will display shelf after shelf of text books on
aspects of seamanship. This course is not intended to duplicate these,
rather it has the specific purpose of arranging material in an orderly way
to suit the teaching syllabus of the RVCP Seamanship Theory Course
which embraces not only small, power vessels but also larger cruisers.

Furthermore, the contents have been chosen and adapted to meet the
syllabus of the Yachting Australia National Training Scheme for the TL5
qualification and it is an approved course for the purpose.

The mandatory subjects required by Yachting Australia for Seamanship
(Part of the theory course for the Inshore Skipper Certificate) are as
 follows:

  • Nautical terms

  • Ropework

  • Anchors and anchoring

  • Safety equipment and precautions

  • Rough weather handling

  • Man overboard

  • Collision and port regulations

Students who sit for the examination at the end of the course must
answer questions on all of these subjects.

 In addition, the course includes:

  • Handling under power

  • Fire fighting and prevention

  • Basic navigation

  • Tides

  • Lights, buoys and beacons

  • Emergencies and towing

All courses are run at the Coastal Patrol Broken Bay Base,
Bayview Boat Ramp, Rowland Reserve, Pittwater Rd,
 Bayv
